What I’m Up To

My First Publication

The TEaCH Lab

In the beginning of the 2017-2018 year, I wrote a few grants, and I received both. The money was used to build a model classroom for students who are in the Associate of Arts in Teaching program at Lone Star College-Tomball. Well, the room is almost complete, and it is being recognized locally. Here is an article about the classroom.

ITCP Gets Recognized!

In September 2016, 18 faculty joined the inaugural cohort of ITCP.  Today, February 23, 2017, ITCP was recognized in a local press release.   Here is the press release.

Texas Community College Teacher’s Association Convention Presentation

Today was a great day.  I had the opportunity to present GRIT to more than 60 instructors from across the state of Texas.  It was exciting to hear my peers say that they were going to begin infusing grit in their classrooms next week!  Today was a great day.

Grants for a model classroom

Every year, Lone Star College System, provides several opportunities for faculty to apply for grants that help fund innovations for the college.  This year (Fall 2016), I took advantage of two grant opportunities: the mini-grant and the campus technology grant.  I was awarded both grants (nearly $27,000) to fund a model classroom that is designed to promote student engagement while also teaching future teachers “how” to teach the students of tomorrow.  Stay tuned for pictures documenting the transformation of this classroom to a lab for LSC-Tomball’s Associate of Arts in Teaching students!

Instructional Technology Certification Program

This summer, summer 2016, I wrote an original 180+ page instructor manual for a new instructional technology certification program (ITCP). This program was specifically designed for college instructors who wish to infuse technology-rich, engaging lessons, learning activities, and teaching materials into their classrooms.  This is a 10 session program:  nine 3 hour instructional sessions, and one presentation session where all participants will share what they learned throughout the program.

The session titles of the 9 instructional sessions for the Pilot program include:

  • What is Instructional Technology?
  • Beefing up your Current Learning Materials
  • Creating Engaging and Interactive Lessons
  • Keeping up in the 21st Century Classroom
  • Finding, Captioning, and Including Videos in your Presentations
  • Pivot Your Instruction
  • Let’s Get Visual
  • All About Google
  • How to Handle Social Media and Networking in the Classroom

Sessions will begin in September 2016 and end in April 2017!

My (first, but hopefully not my last) TEDtalk

In October (2015), I did something I never thought I would do…I gave a TEDtalk at a local TEDx event.  My topic was education, of course.  While I love what I do, I recognize some of the problems with education, mainly how we have let down some of our students who are in underrepresented populations.  My TEDtalk is about what I identify as one of the main problems in education and the solution to this problem.
